Celebrate the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III
When it comes to the biggest and most fabulous events of 2023, it doesn’t get much better than this.
Saturday 6th May will mark the historic crowning of Their Majesties, King Charles III and The Queen Consort, Camilla. The Coronation Ceremony will be followed by a weekend of celebration, pageantry, and traditional British festivities, making it the perfect time to experience London, and the United Kingdom, in all its splendor. The organizers are going all-out for this momentous occasion, and here are some of the main events taking place over the weekend.
Saturday 6th May
Whilst His Majesty has been King since 8th September 2022, the Coronation Ceremony is the symbolic celebration and formalization of his reign and is sure to be an unmissable spectacle. The morning will begin with ‘The King’s Procession’ from Buckingham Palace to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Westminster Abbey, the location for all coronations since 1066.
In accordance with tradition, the ceremony will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury but it is otherwise a shorter, smaller, and more modern affair than previous coronations. It is expected to last about an hour and to be attended by around 2,000 guests, as well as to include multi-faith elements to reflect the diversity of Britain and the Commonwealth. During the ceremony, King Charles III will take the Coronation Oath, be anointed with holy oil, receive the Sovereign’s orb, ring and scepter and have the dazzling St Edward’s Crown placed upon his head.
After the service, the King, Queen, and the Royal Family will parade back to Buckingham Palace in an even more elaborate procession, known as ‘The Coronation Procession’. They will later appear on the Palace’s famous balcony. The ceremony and processions will be televised worldwide, and tens of thousands will line the decorated streets of the capital to celebrate the new King. The atmosphere in the city will undoubtedly be jubilant, and merriments will continue long into the night.
Sunday 7th May
The second day of celebrations will see two key events, The Coronation Big Lunch and the Coronation Concert. The Big Lunch will be a quintessentially British street party, seeing people up and down the country gather on streets adorned with bunting and lined with picnic tables to share food, fun, and fizz in celebration of the new monarch.
The Coronation Concert is a star-studded event taking place on the grounds of Windsor Castle and being broadcast on big screens around the city, country, and the world. It will see global icons and contemporary stars perform with a world-class orchestra alongside performers from the world of dance and other performing arts. During the concert, there will be an impressive ‘Lighting up the Nation’ display that will see some of the UK’s most-loved landmarks, including several in London, illuminated by lasers, projections, and drone displays.
