About New Orleans Lakefront Airport

Lakefront Airport (NEW) is just five miles from the center of New Orleans. It was originally built as the region’s primary air hub. Today, the airport is renowned for its fine Art Deco architecture.

Construction started in 1929, and it was built on a man-made peninsula by Lake Pontchartrain. The architects who designed the Louisiana State Capitol were responsible for the striking design, and it opened in 1934.

The Art Deco design includes stone flooring, deluxe gilded accents, and custom artworks by well-known painters and sculptors. Despite Louis Armstrong National Airport opening during the 1940s, Lakefront expanded during the 1950s. It was badly damaged by both Hurricane Katrina (2005) and Hurricane Isaac (2012) but has since been fully restored.

Lakefront Airport has been featured on screen, including in the movie Green Lantern. It has also been used as a venue for World War II re-enactments in recent years.
